QUARTERBACK: Julian Sayin
In the quarterback position, Julian Sayin emerges as the only returning Heisman Trophy finalist and the Scarlet and Gray's QB1. Sayin's first season as a starter in 2025 was productive, with a 77% completion rate and 3,610 passing yards. His focus on improving his movement in the pocket and using his legs more could elevate his game further. With backup Tavien St. Clair not yet challenging for the starting job, Sayin's position seems secure for the time being.
RUNNING BACK: Bo Jackson
Bo Jackson, who was third or fourth on the depth chart heading into the 2025 season, has now become entrenched as the Buckeyes' starting running back. Despite missing spring practice due to a shoulder procedure, Jackson's performance last season, where he rushed for 1,000 yards, has solidified his position. However, he could make a leap in Year 2 if he develops in areas like making defenders miss and breaking tackles.
WIDE RECEIVER: X (Jeremiah Smith) and Z (Devin McCuin)
Jeremiah Smith, the best wide receiver in college football since arriving at Ohio State, is set to be the Buckeyes' top receiver once again. With 163 catches for 2,558 yards and 27 touchdowns in his first two seasons, Smith's leadership and vocal presence have stepped up this offseason. NFL teams are already excited about the chance to draft Smith in 2027.
Devin McCuin, one of two incoming transfers, has shown the most polished performance among the new receivers. His experience gives him an edge over other options, and he could play opposite Smith. Kyle Parker from LSU is another transfer who could be an option at this spot.
SLOT: Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss, back for his senior season, has plenty to prove. In his first season as a full-time starter, he set career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, but was not as productive as expected. However, his role as a leader and starting slot receiver is secure, with McCuin, Parker, and freshman Brock Boyd also capable of playing this position.
TIGHT END: Nate Roberts
Nate Roberts, a former four-star prospect, will play his natural position and is in line to start. His solid blocking and good hands, as evidenced by his high school statistics, make him a valuable asset. However, the Buckeyes plan to play multiple tight ends again this season under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
OFFENSIVE LINE: LT (Ian Moore), LG (Luke Montgomery), C (Carson Hinzman), RG (Austin Siereveld), and RT (Phillip Daniels)
The offensive line is a key area of focus, with left tackle and right guard being the biggest questions. Ian Moore, a natural fit at tackle, is trending toward starting in 2026. Luke Montgomery, who started at left guard last season, will once again be an obvious starter. Carson Hinzman, who started at center for the Buckeyes to open the year, has improved each season. Austin Siereveld's versatility has been important, and Phillip Daniels, who earned the right tackle spot in the offseason, will start at right guard.
