Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen plans to meet with Rubio to discuss the US threats to Denmark's semi-autonomous territory, a move seen by many European leaders as a turning point that has damaged trust with their biggest ally. This sentiment is echoed by eight former US ambassadors to Nato and supreme commanders in Europe, who have issued an open letter urging Washington to maintain its support for the Western defensive alliance.
They emphasize that Nato is not just a charity but a powerful force-multiplier, allowing the US to assert its influence in ways that would be otherwise impossible or prohibitively expensive. The strain on the transatlantic relationship has been building, especially with the introduction of tariffs by the Republican president and the suggestion in the US national security strategy that European nations may not remain reliable allies in the long term.
Rubio is expected to take a more conciliatory approach this year, but when asked about his plans, he hinted at a desire to engage with Europe, stating, "Europeans want to know our vision and where we see our relationship going."
As German Chancellor Friedrich Merz prepares to open the conference, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasizes the need to define what holds Nato together and to show the US that Europe is an essential partner. President Macron, who will also address the conference, has previously stated that now is not the time for new imperialism or colonialism.
After a week of domestic political turmoil, Sir Keir Starmer will join the discussions in Munich, meeting with both Merz and Macron. Conference chairman Wolfgang Ischinger highlights the uncertainty surrounding the future of the international order, stating that the White House's foreign policy is already shaping the world in ways we are only beginning to understand.
