The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has reported a surge in anti-Muslim abuse targeting women wearing hijabs following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. Since the incident, there has been a near-200% increase in hate incidents, with 62 cases officially reported to the ANIC helpline. These incidents include physical attacks, such as a Muslim disability support worker having her hijab ripped off by a passing couple, and verbal abuse, like a woman being spat at while wearing a hijab in Perth. The ANIC's Action Against Islamophobia initiative has received numerous reports of harassment, vandalism, and online hate directed at Islamic institutions and individuals. This wave of Islamophobia has deeply affected the Muslim community, with many expressing devastation, distress, and fear. The divisive rhetoric from politicians and media has contributed to the rise in anti-Muslim sentiment, as noted by the ANIC's senior advisor, Bilal Rauf. The community is struggling to confront the hatred, and the situation has been particularly challenging for women wearing hijabs, who have faced verbal and physical attacks. Member for Bankstown Jihad Dib expressed disappointment and concern, emphasizing the need for upstanders to confront hateful behavior, regardless of the perpetrator. The NSW Premier, Chris Minns, described the reports of heightened aggression as 'horrifying' and 'disgusting', vowing to not tolerate racism in the community.
