Connor Zilisch's Epic Pennzoil 250 Win at Indy! | NASCAR Xfinity Series Highlights (2026)

The Rising Star Shines Bright at Indy

In a year filled with memorable moments at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one victory stands out as a testament to the power of potential. We're talking about Connor Zilisch's incredible win at the Pennzoil 250, a triumph that sparked celebration and controversy alike.

Zilisch, a name that's quickly becoming synonymous with success, etched his name into the history books on July 26th. But here's where it gets interesting: this wasn't just any ordinary win. It was his first at the Racing Capital of the World, yet he had already tasted victory at IMS, having stood on the podium in previous years.

His impressive résumé includes a third-place finish in the 2021 SCCA Runoffs and a return to the podium in 2024 as part of the Era Motorsport team. And let's not forget, he achieved all this before his 19th birthday!

The Xfinity Series rookie phenomenon delivered a heart-stopping performance in the No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet. With two laps remaining, he passed fellow rookie Taylor Gray, and then held off pole sitter Sam Mayer by a mere 0.339 seconds. It was a dramatic finish to say the least, and Zilisch's third consecutive victory, adding to his already impressive five wins for the season.

"This is incredible," Zilisch exclaimed. "The bricks are calling my name, and I can't wait to kiss them! Winning at Indy is a dream come true, and reaching 100 wins for JRM is the icing on the cake. Today is truly awesome!"

Gray finished third in the No. 54 Toyota, with NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson close behind. Ryan Sieg rounded off the top five. The race was halted twice due to rain, and it was during the closing stages that Zilisch regained the lead. A caution period from Laps 92-96, triggered by a crash involving Austin Hill and Aric Almirola, added to the drama.

On the Lap 97 restart, Gray took the lead with a strong push into Turn 1, but Zilisch fought back immediately, diving under Gray in Turn 2. The decisive moment came on Lap 99 when Zilisch made a bold move, and this time, Mayer was right behind him, providing the perfect draft to clear Gray. Mayer also passed Gray, but it was Zilisch who controlled the final stretch, securing the victory.

And this is the part most people miss: earlier in the race, Justin Allgaier and Kyle Larson seemed like the favorites. However, on Lap 87, Larson made contact with Allgaier, sending him into the SAFER Barrier and ending his chances of victory. This incident opened the door for Zilisch and Gray to take control, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Zilisch's win was a milestone not just for him but also for JR Motorsports. It was their 100th win, a remarkable achievement in itself. So, what do you think? Is Zilisch's rise to the top a sign of a new racing legend in the making? Or was his victory a fluke, aided by the misfortunes of others? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
