The Defence Department's emphasis on the Ghost Bat and Ghost Shark programs is a step in the right direction, but there are concerns about the balance and allocation of resources. The Ghost Bat, an autonomous drone with a range of over 3,700 kilometers, is designed to work alongside piloted aircraft, providing protection and support. However, its cost of between $12 million and $15 million per unit is relatively high compared to the mass-produced drones used in other conflicts. The Ghost Shark, an extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle, is also shrouded in secrecy, with limited information available about its capabilities and specifications. While these systems are undoubtedly important, the focus on large, expensive drones may be missing the mark. The war in Ukraine has shown that smaller, cheaper drones can be just as effective, if not more so, in reshaping the battlefield. Australia's investment in these technologies is minimal compared to other projects, and there is a need for a more balanced distribution of defense spending. The key is to develop the industrial capability to produce drones rapidly and avoid sitting on shelves. The Australian Defence Force should not be replacing conventional military power with drones, but rather using them as a force multiplier alongside traditional systems. In my opinion, Australia's military strategy should be more focused on building up smaller drone fleets, which can provide mass, speed, and adaptability. This balance between large and small drones is crucial to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving landscape of modern warfare.
