The ongoing redevelopment of the North Adelaide golf course has sparked concerns among wildlife carers, who fear the loss of habitat for possums and birds. The project, which involves the removal of nearly 600 trees, has already begun with the relocation of possums from their natural habitats. Wildlife experts warn that this disruption could lead to severe consequences for the local ecosystem.
Marian MacLucas, chairperson of the Save Our Wildlife Foundation, highlights the importance of the area known as 'Possum Park' near the River Torrens. She emphasizes that this location is a critical habitat for possums, particularly ringtail and brushtail possums, which rely on mature trees with hollows for shelter and foraging. MacLucas expresses her worries about the potential displacement of these animals, as possums are highly territorial and may struggle to adapt to the new possum boxes provided.
The government, however, assures that every tree is being inspected and that specialist fauna handlers are assessing the best relocation options. They claim to have mapped the possum population and installed new boxes to support habitat continuity. Yet, MacLucas argues that relocating adult possums with joeys can lead to separation, and that possum boxes cannot replace the thermal protection provided by trees.
The controversy extends beyond possums. Jasmine Connellan from Hills Wildlife Guardians reported an incident involving a lorikeet found on the ground, unable to fly, with a broken clavicle. This incident raises questions about the potential impact on other bird species and the overall biodiversity of the area.
Despite the concerns, the government spokesperson maintains that the project has undergone extensive environmental assessment and planning, with a focus on protecting biodiversity and preserving the parklands' character. They emphasize the use of dedicated fauna identification and protection measures, as well as the involvement of fauna handlers, ecologists, and arborists to ensure the safety of wildlife during the tree removal process.
However, MacLucas criticizes the lack of consultation with wildlife groups, suggesting that the government could have engaged in more dialogue to address these concerns. The redevelopment's potential impact on the local ecosystem and the delicate balance of wildlife remains a topic of debate, as the project progresses with the aim of transforming the golf course into a world-class facility while navigating the challenges of environmental conservation.
